JVM and JavaScript
JavaScript is different than the JVM.  JavaScript is required and lets you see what others have written with the TFE.  The JVM is optional and lets you write with the TFE yourself.

Why Use Attachments?

File attachments are used for documents that are:

  • longer than a few paragraphs
  • contain spreadsheets, graphics, and presentation files
  • contain complex text formatting not easily achieved with HTML or the TFE

Attaching HTML Files: Don't!
Do not use the attach feature for files with these extensions: .html, .htm, .asp,  and .jsp. Doing so will result in technical problems that may affect multiple areas of the classroom. Alternative ways to include HTML files

File Size Limit
Each file or group of files submitted at one time can be no larger than 10 MB in size. To submit files larger than 10 MB, you must break the file into several smaller files and submit the document as a series separate submissions. Or, you may attach a file larger than 10 MB by zipping up with WinZip or similar compression software. http://www.winzip.com/  Zip files save time and space and make downloading large files and transferring large attachments to e-mails much faster.

File Compatibility with Classmates
Any kind of file can be uploaded into WebTycho, but unless the file is a text-only file, your class members will have to have software compatible with what you used in order to open and read the file. For example, if you have the newest version of Microsoft Word,  readers with an earlier version may have difficulty opening and reading the file. Learn how to make Microsoft Word 2007 files compatible with Microsoft Word 2003 files.

File Names

  • Files must not have extensions .htm, .html, .asp, .jsp
  • File names must not contain pound signs  (#)
  • If you upload the same document more than once in the same upload transfer, the duplicate files will be renamed to something distinct from the first file of the same name. To avoid this, make sure all documents uploaded at the same time have unique names.

Macintosh File Names
If you have difficulty uploading a file, you may have to manually add a period and the three letter file extention to the file name. For example:

  • A Microsoft Word file looks like this: title.doc
A Word Perfect file looks like this: title.wpd
A Power Point document looks like this: title.ppt

How to Delete a File You Have Attached

  1. Open the assignment, conference note, or collaborative document to which you attached the file
  2. Click Edit.
  3. Scroll to the bottom to Mark Attachments for Deletion.
  4. Check the document you wish to delete
  5. Click Submit.

Students: Only attachments to assignments that you have saved as drafts may be deleted. While you may edit your own conference notes and collaborative documents at any time, you may not edit assignment area attachments once the assignment has been submitted for grade. If you must delete an assignment file after submitting, contact your instructor for permission and assistance.

How to Open an Attached File

Text files

  1. 1. If the attachment was saved as a text (*.txt) it will open immediately in a new browser window when you click on the attachment icon.
  2. 2. Download the file to your hard drive or a diskette.
  3. 3. Right click (PC) on the attachment icon.
  4. 4. Click on Save Link As. A dialog box will give you the opportunity to specify a drive, directory, and file name for the file you are saving.
  5. 5. Open the file in a program that can read text documents (e.g., Wordpad, Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, Composer, or Front Page).

various files

If the attachment was saved in a program-specific file format, such as Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, or Excel, your browser will ask you when you click on the attachment icon whether you want to open or download the file.  Since program-specific files can carry viruses, you should always opt to download the file to a directory you have set up for your class.  Then open your  virus- scanning software and scan the file for viruses before you open it in a  program that can read the file.
