JVM and JavaScript
JavaScript is different than the JVM.  JavaScript is required and lets you see what others have written with the TFE.  The JVM is optional and lets you write with the TFE yourself.

Introduction to Using Text in WebTycho
To avoid losing or damaging your class work please read this section completely and refer to it throughout the semester.

Important: Microsoft Office Suite 2003 does not recognize or open documents created with Microsoft Office 2007 unless the MS Office 2007 document is saved in the 2003 format. Make Microsoft Office Suite 2007 documents compatible with Microsoft Office Suite 2003 documents.

  1. There are two ways to submit text:
    A. Type in an Online Text Box
    B. Attach Files
  2. You can save draft text and finish it later.
  3. Certain precautions must be taken.
  4. Make Microsoft Office Suite 2007 documents compatible with Microsoft Office Suite 2003 documents. (This link opens a new page.)
    ...................................................................................................................

1. Two Ways to Submit Text: Text Box or Attach File

  1. Text Box.  Type text online in a text box, of which there are three types to choose from: Plain Text, HTML, or Text Formatting Editor.  Before you begin typing use Account Preferences to choose which one you plan to use.
  2. Attach File.  Attach files of any kind except HTML.  Here's how....

2. How to Save Text
Save text to avoid losing work as a result of internet disconnection, power failure, or security auto-log off.

If using Plain Text or HTML Text Boxes

  • Assignment Area: Use WebTycho's Save as Draft button frequently. This will save your work to the WebTycho server.  Then return to the document to Edit and continue work.  Don't worry: your  instructor will not be able to see it until you click Submit for Grading.  When you are ready to hand it in, be sure to click Submit for Grading.  See also: Portfolio

  • Conference Area: Simply Submit, and then return to Edit and continue work. The note will be visible to the rest of the class, so to let class members know that the note is unfinished you may like to add a note at the bottom, such as "Unfinished" or the like.   You may also use the Workbook to draft text online before making it visible to others.

If using the Text Formatting Editor

While typing in the TFE you can save your text as a file on your local hard drive. Because the TFE provides most of the formatting tools available in MicroSoft Word plus the security of saving your files on a hard drive, you can begin and end your work in WebTycho's TFE instead of creating your text in a word processing program and then pasting into WebTycho. See Save TFE Text on Your Computer's Hard Drive:  Easily Create Back-Ups of Your Work

3. Precautions

    Don't Enable/Disable TFE While Typing
Enabling and disabling the Text Formatting Editor and the Spell Checker (with Account Preferences) after you have typed text into a WebTycho text box but before you have saved or submitted it, will result in a loss of all text as well as formatting.

Don't Use Different Kinds of Text Boxes for the Same Note
Be consistent when creating a conference note, assignment, or any other text with any of WebTycho's formatting methods, (Plain Text, TFE, HTML). If you have to edit the document then use the same method when the document was created. For example, if you edit a document created with the Text Formatting Editor (TFE) and have since disabled the TFE, you will receive a dialog box warning you that you currently have the TFE disabled. You will be given the opportunity to enable TFE before you proceed. If you do not enable the TFE at this point, then formatting will be lost. While it is not necessary to create all documents the same way it is important to maintain a consistent format for an individual document.

    Text Formatting Editor Caution
Enabling and disabling the Text Formatting Editor and the Spell Checker after you have entered text into a WebTycho text box, but before you have submitted it, will result in a loss of all text. If you find that while typing you must change text boxes, then save or submit your text first (button at bottom of page), change text boxes in Account Preferences, and then return to the document to finish your text composition.

Limit the Size of the Note
Keep in mind that there is a limit to the amount  (~30K-35K) of information that can fit within these text boxes. Anything larger should  be attached as a file for submission.  Attempts to submit material larger than this will result in loss of text.

Work Offline to Protect Your Work
The importance of composing and saving lengthy assignments, conference notes, and  content submissions offline onto your computer cannot be overstated. Internet connections may be lost at any time, and for security purposes, WebTycho times-out.  When this happens, any document in WebTycho that has not yet been saved or submitted will be permanently lost. After composing in a word processor, either copy and paste the text or submit file attachments.  Copy and Paste from Microsoft Word or any other software only into the TFE but do not paste into a Plain Text Box. Here's why...    And remember to turn off Smart Quotes.
